It’s a time for one THOSE posts. I really like to do just content. You know something gameable like a monster, magic item or some sort of house rule. But now and then, I have to do one those mental cleansings that keep things on track. Especially, since just started doing some podcasting on Anchor.fm.
So what’s up? Well, I’m getting ready to wrap up another Dungeon Crawl Classics game. And it’s been fun. We had some fantastic sessions. Like the time everyone was down but the thief and the elf and they were going against an evil wizard. Things were bad for the party. Until those two characters crited said evil wizard in the same round. But in true DCC, there was a player epiphany. He hated the character he ended up with after the funnel but then after surviving a few close calls and surviving some adventures, the player started to really enjoy the character. So yeah that was cool.
Up next is Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells. This is going to fun little campaign and I’ve got all the cool stuff planned out but more on that later. Then I’m going to take a little break from the DM seat. But that time isn’t going to idle. I’ve a hankering and the players of the group are interested in old school game. I’m pretty sure that I’m going to Swords & Wizardry White Box and use so much of the cool add ons for especially the White Box Omnibus. But every once in a while I get the urge to play with it even more. Something crazy like actually used the “advanced” HD and weapons damage but still keep the simpler classes in White Box. Or just do more tweaks on White Box. I dunno. Brainstorming time. Plus I know I’ve got to put a little flesh on to Zoong. That’s the crazy world I’ve been using with DCC and 5E but there’s a few odds and ends that need to added.Since it’s just a bunch or random notes scrawled out during game sessions. Yeah, literally making it up as I go along. As bonus, I plan to start it off with Keep on the Border Lands. Give the kids a field trip back to the days of youre.
So not much substance. Lots rant. Keep Rolling Dice. Killing Monsters. Taking Their Stuff. And Having Fun.
I really like doing house rules. So here you go. Once I let these brew in my little brain for a while, I’ll probably do a PDF and put on the Downloads Page.
Initiative: Let’s make it a little more random. Roll your HD for Initiative. Since all monsters have D8 HD, the Powerful Enemy rule would apply to the monster’s roll based on the average party level. (I think I shared this one before).
Medium Rests: Healing is pretty tough in the game. Normally, you don’t heal til you get back to “town” and there’s no clerics to play healbot. (and I think someone in the G+ Community already suggested this or something similar.) Get a night’s rest. Make a PHY Test. If successful, heal a HD.
Recovering Luck: Instead of resetting at the end of an adventure. Recover one die step after a night of carousing! That should makes things a little more interesting and keep the characters broke, drunk, and in trouble. I’m considering expending this to include a way to recover a little bit of Sanity too. But that’s going to take a little rules tweaking.
Yes, a very short post. But hey, I use this thing to throw out those crazy ideas. Once I wrap my current Dungeon Crawl Classics game, it’s for some Sharp Swords action, so I’ll probably post a lot more stuff when that ball start rolling.
Since it was requested Here’s the Version 3 of the character sheet. A few things have been rearranged and I’ve added Sanity. My Character Sheet V3
And as a bonus here’s some ideas on house rules. Initiative: I really like the idea of using Hit Dice to determine initiative. I was playing around with a similar idea before I’d even heard of Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells so why not take that old idea and apply it in a new way. Now, I’ve played games with static initiative and while it was easy, generally everybody went in the same order every round and it got kind of boring and predictable. So what to do? Roll your Hit Die and go in order from highest to lowest roll.
The more combat oriented characters have a better chance of going first but not always.
Blood/Hit Points: I like both so why not use both. Well sort of basically. The minimum uninjured HP that a character has is equal to their Physique. When the character gains a level and they could potentially roll (with all their Hit Dice) more than their Physique then roll the dice. If the total is less then nothing changes. If the total is more then that’s the characters new total HP and when the character gains their next level just roll an additional Hit Die as normal.
There’s more ideas bouncing around my head but that’s for later when they start making sense to me.
When I originally started this blog, the idea was to do just content and put all the rants and every else on the other (now dead) blog. But since I’ve moved domains and consolidated, I figure what the heck. So the plan it to add in a weekly rant about whatever I happen to feel like ranting about. Don’t worry folks, I won’t completely loose my mind. So up first, there’s some folks that deserve your lunch money (in no particular order).
Maximum Mayhem Dungeons: Palace of the Dragon Princess: I’ve backed Dark Wizard’s other Kickstarters before. Yeah, I know I did miss a couple but each one has been cool and just right amount of crazy (sometimes bordering on gonzo). Now, $10 for a PDF may seem a little steep but their adventures have had a cool OSR vibe and their monster book, Monsters of Mayhem, is pretty darned awesome. Note to self, get a hard copy of this sometime.
Next up: There’s Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells. So if you’ve been to this old blog in the past, you know I like crazy stuff, I fell in love with this game’s predecessor, Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells. This going to be a fun and simple game. I’m so ready to go all crazy on it. For $15, you get the PDF and an “at cost” coupon for the soft cover.
And finally there’s Uncle Matt’s D&D Studio’s Patreon. Once again this is something that quickly ranted about before and it’s well worth ranting about again. First, Matt Finch is pretty darned cool guy. While I’ve only a few interactions with him online, each has been calm, cool, professional, entertaining, and educational. Yes, that sounds like I’m a gushing fanboy but there’s a couple things I may disagree on but that’s neither here nor there and not really worth going into or even worrying about. It’s nothing he did so don’t try to dig up dirt. It’s all me. Plus I would if there was one book that started my path to the OSR, I’d have to say that it’s Swords & Wizardry Core. After watching a few of the interviews and actual play episodes (Hey there’s OSR and 5E in the same world), I was hooked. It was enough for finally make a Patreon account.
Here’s the link to the Youtube Channel in case you want to see for yourself.
There go. Three folks who deserve your lunch money.
Yep, I keep making stuff for that upcoming game (which is supposed to happen after the current Dungeon Crawl Classics game). You know, I’m surprised that there aren’t more neat tools for this game so I made some. These aren’t any super special or pretty. I went for plain and useful.
First up we’ve got a GM Cheat Sheet. Not a full screen and has what I think I’ll probably need to refer to the most or just find handy. I’ve combined a couple of charts/tables into one. And I’ve added the “Medium” rest. It’s a house rules and I think someone previously had mentioned on the G+ Community.
I also made a little GM Log sheet to keep track of the key bits of information on the player characters. I admit, I don’t normally do this but it just might prove useful. So here’s the PDF’s. GM Cheat Sheet GM Log
And yes, that DCC game is still going. It’s just that nothing that warranted a whole blog post happened. And I’ve started putting together some notes for a White Box game which will happen after the Sharp Swords and Sinister Spells game. Yes, I plan that far out.
So keep those dice rolling. Keep killing those monsters and taking their stuff.
So I did a little updating to the character sheet after some very nice and good feedback. It’s basically the same but looks prettier. I moved a couple of things around and tried to make the Attributes and such stand out a little more. After all, I’m not a graphic designer by any stretch of the imagination. I muddle thru the best I can. Enjoy and keep those dice a rollin’.
